Turkey is one of the countries like France, Spain and the US were the tram nearly completely disappeared mid of the 20th century and where a massive deployment of new systems started at the end of this same century. Trams are now running in ten cities, the eleventh being announced for launching operations in the upcoming years. Turkish tram systems offer a variety of models and lines, ranging from small vintage lines operated with German second hand trams to vast classical tram networks covering all neighborhoods of a city.
Some lines are built as heavy light rail, 100% segregated from the public space. Newest technologies are present as well, like battery-powered sections. That all makes Turkey a very nice destination from tram enthusiasts.

The revival of trams is accelerated by new local tram factories, some of them having now leading positions in the industry. The newest player in that club is the Turkish manufacturer Durmazlar, based in the Bursa region, who launched the production of trams in 2013.

Turkey is a vast country spread over two continents. With a total area of 783,6 km², it is more than twice the size of Germany. Due to the variety of models, the large size of systems, the splendid sceneries along most of the lines with marvelous city center spots, the visits to the Turkish tram systems are split into 3 tours, starting with the North-Western networks.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1: Samsun
Individual arrival at the airport in Samsun where you will meet your German and Turkish tour guides. As the airport is out of town and most flights arrive between 8pm and 11.30pm, there is a shuttle bus waiting for you that departs from the airport to the hotel at 8.45pm, 10pm and 11.15pm.

Day 2: Samsun
After breakfast, departure to the tram depot which you can visit with official permission. The depot houses standard gauge trams made by Ansaldo (Italy), CNR (Tangshan China) and Durmazlar (Turkey). After the tour, an exclusive charter trip will cover the entire network, including the branch to the stadium, which is normally only served on special occasions. From there you then ride your charter tram to the other end of the network at Yurtlar. The charter ends here and you may spend the rest of the day exploring the Samsun network on your own.

Samsun operates one of the lowest number of reserve vehicles on modern networks in the world. Normally almost all vehicles are in use, only a single unit remains in the workshop for potential repairs.

Day 3: Samsun - Izmit
Early morning bus transfer to Samsun Airport and domestic flight with SunExpress airline to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport. Continuation by bus to Izmit and hotel check-in. Like all hotels on this trip, it is located near a tram stop and you can therefore easily explore the network in Izmit on your own. Local Durmazla-type trams operate on the standard-gauge line.

Day 4: Izmit - Bursa
In the morning you will visit the depot, followed by a charter trip to Plajyoku and back. Depending on the traffic situation and frequency, you can get out of the tram car on the way and photograph your charter extensively at the most beautiful spots. Around noon, take the bus to Bursa. At the Durmazlar Tram factory you will enjoy frequent photo opportunities, including the production facilities and on the test tracks outside the factory buildings. You continue to the "Bursaray Light Railway", where, in addition to the "Green City" model from Durmazlar, "Flexity Swift" from Bombardier are also used. You can visit the depot and take photos of the vehicles inside the depot area. We hope to be able to see some of the old former wagons from Rotterdam in Bursa, too. In the evening we will enjoy a typical Turkish dinner.

Day 5: Bursa
Today you will experience the city's extensive and diverse tram lines. In addition to the "T1" circuit, the new "T2" line may already be in operation - commissioning is scheduled for October 2022! Since 2013, the regular-gauge Durmazlar model "Silkworm" has been operating on line "T1". Of particular interest is the "T3" line, which serves the city centre with former German trams from Bochum and Gotha on meter gauge. You will visit the depots of all lines and travel the entire route of the "T3" in an ex-Gothaer car as part of an exclusive charter. A special tram-trip has also been arranged on the "T1" line. After the charters have finished, there is enough time to explore the network on your own or, if you are interested, to visit the Bursaray line again.

Day 6: Bursa - Eskisehir
After breakfast drive to Eskisehir. Check into the hotel there and spend the rest of the day exploring the city's extensive meter gauge network. Bombardier (Flexity Outlook) and Škoda (ForCity Classic) trams are waiting for you!

Day 7: Eskisehir
The network of the "EsTram" offers a wealth of beautiful photo spots that you can "work through" with the regular traffic vehicles. Bombardier railcars (similar to the vehicles used in Linz) and the Škoda trams, which were only delivered a few years ago, are based in Eskisehir. The Skoda vehicles are equipped with batteries for about 1 km of catenary-free operation.

Day 8: Eskisehir - Izmir
In the morning you continue to Izmir, where you can check in at the hotel right after arrival and then experience the bustling tram network with Hyundai Rotem Trams. At the beginning of the 1960s, the last section of the "old" tram in Izmir was shut down - only in 2017 did the tram come back with the new standard-gauge lines to Karsiyaka and Konak!

Day 9: Izmir
After a morning tour of the depot you will explore the network with a charter tram, photo stops included. You will also visit the depot of the Metro in Izmir and can then photograph the vehicles in regular use. Have a farewell dinner tonight.

Day 10: Izmir
The airport in Izmir is very well connected to public transport and with the IZBAN ticket you can take the train to the airport at your own pace. Individual journey home.
Your tour group is expected to be very international, the tour guides speak German, English, Flemish/Dutch, French and Turkish.

In the past, some groups experienced security issues raised by local guards although the groups had official permits from the transport companies. In order to avoid problems on this tour, the local security office and town hall administration will be involved additionally, providing a written statement endorsing photography (albeit photography from public places is allowed in general) and a local guide will accompany the group even outside the official tour program (if requested).
